The Greek Consulate officially began its duties in the State of New South Wales (NSW) in 1891.
It initially started as an Honorary Vice Consulate which was based in the city of Parkes, which is 365km away from Sydney. The first Vice Consul of NSW was Angelo Foleros (1891 – 1896)
In 1896, the Vice Consulate was upgraded to Consulate and relocated to Sydney with Consul Marcos Maniatis (1896 -1904). During his term as Consul the Consulate became Consulate General in 1903 with its jurisdiction covering all of Australia except of Melbourne and Tasmania.
The jurisdiction that the Consulate General covers today includes the State of New South Wales which has an area of approximately 809.444 sq km.
The Honorary Consulate General of Newcastle and the Consulate General of Brisbane which has jurisdiction in the State of Queensland are also supported by the Consulate General of Sydney when its necessary (e.g. issuing visas).
A full range of consular services are provided by the Consulate General of Greece to the Greek citizen community of New South Wales. Such as travel document issuance, citizenship determination, birth, marriage and death registrations, visa issue to Australian and third country nationals, including non – immigrant and immigrant visas.
The Consulate General except from its consular duties also encompasses the services of the Education Consular Office (which is located within the General Consulate of Sydney), the Office of the Consul for Maritime Affairs, the Press Office, the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs and the Office of Tourism which are all based in Sydney.
